Dr Deema Kaneff 

She has studied Bulgaria for 20 years, including living almost 4 years in the country itself during both the socialist and postsocialist periods and in a variety of urban and rural contexts.

Dr Kaneff speaks Bulgarian fluently (and thus has a good working knowledge of other Slavic languages, especially Macedonian, Serbian and Croatian) and also Russian.  This gives her access to research resources in east European countries not normally accessible to western social scientists.

During her professional career she has been closely affiliated with two of the most prestigious institutions in the anthropological world which are renowned for their excellence internationally – Cambridge University in England and the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Germany.  Her years at these institutions give her privileged access to a wide variety of human and material resources that are necessary in the production of excellent research and development projects. Dr Kaneff has lectured at both institutions and also taught at the University of Adelaide, Australia.

Dr Kaneff has worked in a range of successful projects, both as a team member and as an individual researcher.  She was a founder of an interdisciplinary network of scholars, NGOs and other experts with a knowledge of southeastern Europe (the International Association for Southeastern Anthropology).  The network holds regular conferences and is an important platform for bringing together and connecting specialists.  She also has membership in a variety of other professional associations and has brought together regional specialists at several conferences that she has organised.

Her publications include several books that cover not only the countries of Bulgaria and Ukraine but more generally east and west Europe and the former Soviet republics.
